Daniel Sommerville, Professor of Music at the Conservatory of Music, Wheaton College, is the director of the award-winning Wheaton College Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held since 1989. He also teaches conducting and orchestration at the Conservatory. Under his leadership, the orchestra has collaborated with such notable musicians as Sylvia McNair, Lawrence Brownlee, Marvin Hamlisch, Michael W. Smith, Joel Grey, The Hubbard Street Dance Company II, as well as outstanding faculty performers of the Conservatory of Music. Under his direction, the orchestra has won third place in the 2012 American Prize, and has appeared at state and national music conferences. In addition, he has led the orchestra on many concert tours throughout the United States during the past thirty years.
In addition to his work at Wheaton College, Dr. Sommerville is also the music director/conductor of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, which is celebrating its 70th season this year. Dr. Sommerville has Masters and Doctorate degrees in music from Northwestern University, in conducting and composition, respectively, and a Bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin—Oshkosh. He has studied conducting with such notable conductors as Sir Georg Solti, Herbert Blomstedt and John P. Paynter. Past conducting posts include the Elkhart County Symphony Orchestra (Indiana), the Westminster Chamber Orchestra (Illinois) and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra of Chicago. He has been guest conductor of Camerata Chicago, the Sarajevo (Bosnia) Philharmonic, the Marquette Symphony, the DuPage Symphony, and the Fox Valley Orchestra. In addition, he is active as conductor and clinician for Illinois high school honors orchestras and festivals.
