(Rodas) has been appointed to the Scripture Press Ministries Chair of Biblical Studies and Pedagogy by the Wheaton College Board of Trustees, along with the full support of Dean of the School of Biblical and Theological Studies Dr. David Lauber, and Wheaton College President Dr. Philip Ryken. Established in 2005 and modified in 2016, the Scripture Press Ministries Endowed Chair continues “to focus on fostering the training of students in the role of the Bible in the area of Christian ministry and to support the dissemination of information on Biblical pedagogy for the purpose of building the Church.”

“Dr. Carroll contributes significantly to the educational mission of Wheaton College,” Lauber said. “His commitment to the church shapes his work as a teacher, scholar, and mentor. He clearly sees his classes as aimed at contributing to the spiritual formation of his students, for the purpose of training students in reading, interpreting, and teaching the Bible in order to edify and strengthen the church, both in the U.S. and globally.”

Carroll holds a B.A. in English Literature from Rice University, a Th.M. in Old Testament from Dallas Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Old Testament from The University of Sheffield. Since coming to Wheaton in 2016, he has been a Blanchard Professor of Old Testament. Previously, he held faculty appointments at El Seminario Teológico Centroamericano (SETECA) in Guatemala and at Denver Seminary.

Carroll’s teaching and scholarship cover a range of topics for a range of audiences. He has published technical exegetical monographs in Old Testament studies, works that integrate biblical studies with ethics and theology, and church-facing work that contributes to the life and mission of the church—and he has done so in both English and Spanish.

Carroll has recently published The Bible and Borders: Hearing God’s Word on Immigration. He has a major commentary on the book of Amos, in the NICOT (New International Commentary on the Old Testament) series, which will be available in November.

Carroll supervises and mentors Ph.D. students, and teaches classes in both graduate and undergraduate programs. He also energetically seeks out ways to be involved on campus. He has served as the chair of the Diversity Committee, is part of the Diversity Council, and has been the faculty sponsor of the student group Unidad Cristiana. He has contributed to Spanish and Political Science classes at Wheaton and is a supporting faculty member for Wheaton’s Center for Urban Engagement. Carroll is an influential voice that contributes regularly to Wheaton’s commitment to diversity, especially as an advocate for Latina and Latino students and colleagues.

He is also an active member of a number of scholarly societies and academic organizations, including the Society for Old Testament Study, the Evangelical Theological Society, the Institute for Biblical Research, the Society of Biblical Literature, and Fraternidad Teológia Latinoamericana, and the Accreditation Commission of AETAL (Asociacíon Evangélica de Educación Teológica en América Latina). Additionally, he has helped forge a partnership between Wheaton and the Hispanic Theological Initiative, which provides mentorship within Hispanic higher education for our Latino and Latina Ph.D. students.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be appointed to the Scripture Press Ministry Chair,” Carroll said. “I have the joy of working with stellar—and stimulating—colleagues in the School of Biblical and Theological Studies and around the College, and this appointment is yet another confirmation that Wheaton College is where God has called me and my wife to be. Our ongoing prayer is that I might contribute in some measure to institutional excellence and genuine kingdom diversity and community. For all of this, we are grateful to our good God.”
