A Note from the Executive Director

Summer Camp Update — Heavy & Full Hearts, All at Once

Heavy Hearts

Before I touch on our summer at HoneyRock, I want to share that we have been and continue to pray for the Camp Mystic families and those impacted by the tragic floods in Texas. Our hearts go out to all of the affected families, and at the same time, we feel and appreciate the responsibility we have to do all we can to steward and protect the children and students entrusted to our care.

As a HoneyRock staff team, we place a high emphasis on planning, preparation, training, and action. We seek to work as if it all depends on us, but then at the same time praying for God’s protection as if it all depends on God. Our summer staff participate in four weeks of training prior to the first campers arriving, and we feel affirmed in the priority we have placed on this training.

You may also be interested in knowing that we annually review our emergency response and communication plans. This past Spring, we also did a comprehensive risk & safety review, where we hosted Wheaton College Risk Management and took three days to review what could go wrong, what procedures we have in place, what training we do, how it’s documented, where we can improve, etc. As you can imagine, there is some level of risk in many of the things we do, and we want to ensure that we are managing, controlling and minimizing this risk. This includes maintaining important connections with the Three Lakes Police and Fire departments. Please reach out to honey.rock@wheaton.edu if you would like to learn more.

Full Hearts

We are now more than half-way through our summer season. Camp is full and we are very pleased with the student leaders that have come with great hearts for service. They are the hands and feet of Christ, working hard serving our campers.

While we know that much of the fruit from this summer camp season won’t be seen immediately (or seen at all this side of heaven), we are so very grateful for the fruit we are seeing and the stories we are hearing about:

We are blessed by these stories, and I hope you find encouragement from them too. A huge thanks to those of you who have been and are praying for us, and for the students and campers we’re serving. We know God is working, and we are praying that he does the most important work in the hearts of our campers.

God Bless,

Summer Media Team Feature

We would like to highlight our incredible summer media team, who has been capturing all of the amazing photos featured in Bunk1, Northern Light, and throughout the year. The team consists of four college student leaders and one Catalyst 2 camper, all under the management of Samantha Martin, our marketing specialist. For the first time, our media team participated in a training course with professional photographer Adam Pratt, which has already elevated the quality of our photography! They've also put together a Session Highlight Video of Residential Camp Session 1, Advance Camp, and Voyageur below that we hope you enjoy!

Summer Staff  Development

I have loved watching our summer team form throughout training and into camper sessions. This staff was truly chosen, anointed, and appointed for such a summer as this. The unity, culture, and unique hearts of sacrifice and service are unparalleled by past years’ teams. As we have fewer staff than usual (though still over 130), it has been incredibly beautiful to see them come alongside each other and help fill in the gaps where needed. This is the first year where all cabin leaders, even our high school programs, spent substantial time together during summer staff training, bringing unity and consistency in how their teams lead.

A key program highlight from training was our all-camp workday, which allowed all Leadership Schools to work and serve together. I believe this laid the foundation for the most unified summer staff team I have had the privilege to walk alongside.

Finally, I’d like to shout out our Unit Leaders. I couldn’t imagine a better unit leader team; their collaboration, unity, and competence are unmatched.

God’s Peace,

Northwoods Adventure

NorthWoods Adventure (NWA) is an opportunity to be a camper again at HoneyRock! Choose between staying for a full week from Monday, September 29 - Saturday, October 4, 2025 or a long weekend from Thursday, October 2 - Saturday, October 4, 2025. It is an opportunity for  friends, family, and alumni of Wheaton College and HoneyRock to spend time in community with peers while enjoying the beauty of early fall in the Northwoods.

Long time HoneyRockers John and Marcia Kennedy shared, “We exercise together, eat together, hike together, paddle together, bike together, laugh together, and worship together. Conversations at meals with students studying at HoneyRock give a glimpse of the thoughts and amazing capabilities of today’s youth.”

The Kennedy’s love participating in NWA and encourage you to join this fall and be enriched by interaction with old and new friends, invigorated by outdoor activities available and blessed by the profound impact of HoneyRock.

New Cabin Dedication

Thanks to the generous support of our donors during our Double Your Impact Campaign, we are excited to introduce the first two of four log-style camper cabins in our new cabin site, Timber Ridge, which currently houses our 2:22 Girls.  Our team started on the foundation last fall and braved the Northwoods winter to begin construction.

Moose Log Homes in Beloit, WI, supplied the 10” round, pre-cut Eastern White Pine logs. Thanks to our supplier, Final Touch Construction, in Crandon, WI, about 20 miles from Three Lakes, the trusses and tongue-and-groove roof decking, milled from locally sourced White Pine, finished out the cabins.

The building process also included building relationships and developing future leaders. Through each building phase, HoneyRock staff, Vanguards, Fellows, and countless others deepened their relationships with one another and with God. Ultimately, for all who served and gave, there’s no greater delight than knowing these cabins will benefit generations of campers. These new cabins have allowed us to serve a record number of campers this summer! A huge thank you to all who participated in and supported this project.

New Mountain Bike Donation

The donation of seven new small mountain bikes blessed our younger campers. We also want to thank our volunteer father-and-son team, who assembled the new bikes and repaired 28 others before camper arrival so that our campers can have an elevated and safe experience this summer!

Newly Remodeled Lower Vanguard Center

What used to be known as Basecamp for our Day Camp and other programs is now four newly remodeled hotel-style rooms so that we can host even more guests and volunteers. This project took place over the past year with our incredible facilities team and the help of a few Fellows. It’s been amazing to welcome guests in this new space this summer.
