Tobias James is renowned for his vibrant performances and exceptional technique, praised by Grammy-Award-winning guitarist Jason Vieaux for his “great energy, musicality, and genuine enthusiasm for the repertoire.” With a deep passion for sharing his love of guitar, Tobias is dedicated to inspiring and guiding beginners on their musical journeys.

Hailing from the Chicago area and born into a musical family, Tobias began his musical education with Suzuki guitar lessons and cello participation in his school orchestra. His formative experience at the Northwestern High School Music Institute ignited his desire to pursue a career as a professional musician. Since then, Tobias has performed across North America, earned accolades in international competitions, and released professionally recorded music.

Tobias is a versatile musician who embraces a wide range of styles. He plays jazz and rock with the 144th Illinois Army National Guard band, where he has had the privilege of performing for dignitaries and communities throughout Illinois. His passion for flamenco has led him to collaborate with various flamenco troupes, showcasing his versatility in diverse performance settings.

As an educator, Tobias is committed to leveraging technology to enhance music education. He has extensive experience using videoconferencing for private lessons, master classes, and general instruction, connecting students with music institutions and community centers worldwide. He has also developed software solutions for advanced ear training, reflecting his innovative approach to teaching.

Tobias serves as a Suzuki guitar instructor at Wheaton’s Community School of the Arts. He earned his Master of Music in Guitar Performance and Pedagogy from the Peabody Institute, studying under Julian Gray. His undergraduate studies were completed at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Jason Vieaux and Colin Davin, complemented by a Minor in Mathematics from Case Western Reserve University
