ThunderApps for All

Effective Date: April 3, 2020

The Physics and Engineering Department successfully piloted a virtual computer lab in the Fall of 2018.  This timing turned out to be serendipitous, as now is a great time to have more software available to our students that they can access remotely!

We’re delighted to announce that we now have over 80 applications available via ThunderApps!  You can read about ThunderApps here, as well as learn how to install it on a PC or install it on a Mac.  In addition, there is a special workaround for those with 10.15 Catalina.

Using this technology, students are able to access fully functional PC-based programs through a browser on their devices. The actual Windows program is running remotely on a Windows server and the interface is streamed to the user's device so students can use it without purchasing or downloading software.

Some of the key benefits of ThunderApps are these:

  • The College can reduce the number of lab computers on campus and provide students with convenient access to the software they need, even from off-campus.
  • The power and graphics capabilities of the end user's device is not a limitation and has little impact on the overall experience.
  • We can provide students with access to expensive software for coursework.

We’re glad to have partnered with AppsAnyWhere as the best option for Wheaton College.
