Biography

Charles King enjoyed three decades of full-time pastoral music ministry prior to a decade of teaching in Christian higher education in the areas of music and worship. Academic subjects include music history (and related undergraduate general education courses), beginning music theory, and worship music, liturgy, and pastoral practices.

As a church musician and choral conductor, he has worked with ensembles and musicians of all ages and skill levels. He is currently director of music at New Covenant Church, Naperville, Illinois, and directs two Wheaton-area retiree choirs. While no longer active as a trombonist, he continues to play as occasions arise and enjoys playing around with various instruments for his own enjoyment.

His various academic disciplines and ministry experience led to his interdisciplinary thesis for the M.A. in Historical Theology. "Piety and Poeisia: J. S. Bach, Devotional Hymns, and the Lutheran Liturgy" is a study incorporating musicology, theology, church history, and practical liturgical experience.

Mr. King says, "Making music fuels my imagination, inspires me to vibrant interactions with ideas, and connects me to people and cultures. Teaching gives me the pleasure of sharing discovery with students and sharing life in the classroom, in the community, and while traveling."
