Artie Black is a saxophonist, educator, and composer originally from Butler, Pennsylvania. An active performer in both jazz and classical styles, he was recently featured with his group Black Diamond at the 2018 Chicago Jazz Festival, and as a soloist with the Red Rock String Ensemble. In addition to his own groups, he can be heard in performance with ensembles led by drummer Gustavo Cortiñas, bassist Matt Ulery, trumpeter Drew Hansen, and others. Artie's latest project is an apprenticeship and collaboration with Indian tabla master Sandip Burman.
In addition to teaching saxophone at Wheaton, Artie teaches woodwinds through the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and maintains a private saxophone studio. His goal as an educator is to help students find joy through learning for themselves.
