Policy on Service Animals
In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Billy Graham Museum at Wheaton College welcomes service animals on the Museum premises. As defined by federal and state law, only dogs and miniature horses are recognized service animals and must be trained to provide specific tasks for individuals with a disability.
To ensure compliance with ADA guidelines, Museum staff may ask the following questions of any guest desiring to enter the Museum premises with a service animal: 1) Is the animal a service animal because of a disability? and 2) What specific task does is the animal trained to provide? Museums staff may not inquire about the nature of a guest’s disability or request documentation proving a disability.
While on the premises, the handler is responsible for controlling the service animal at all times and ensuring that the service animal is not disruptive to guests or staff. If the handler is not able to control the service animal, the service animal will be required to exit the Museum. Behaviors that can merit expulsion include: incessant barking or jumping, damaging collections or exhibits, aggression toward guests or staff, defecating or urinating in the Museum premises.
While the Museum seeks to abide by ADA guidelines regarding the admissions of service animals, other animals are prohibited from entering the Museum premises. These animals include: personal pets, regardless of size; and any animals described as “therapy animals”, “companion animals”, or “comfort animals” that do not provide a specific task as service animals for an individual with a disability as defined by the ADA.
